China Looks to Geothermal to Hedge Against Natural Gas Prices
After an unsuccessful attempt to convert its northern cities to natural gas, China has released a 5-year plan that pivots towards geothermal and other renewable energy sources. This was a direct response to global supply shortages that led to a major increase in natural gas prices. Natural gas was originally chosen to help the country shift away from coal burning. With half of the country converting to clean heating by 2019, bulk coal burning is expected to be reduced by 74 million tonnes.
